Rodez > exhibition & leisure centre

This exhibition centre is situated on a 10-hectare site and comprises a main multi-purpose exhibition hall, an additional venue and an outside exhibition space, together with a car park. To the west, the site is bordered by the main road (RD 888), lined with a variety of commercial premises. The site under development here was not only green and pleasant, but also presented a considerable incline. The architects at King Kong decided to position the exhibition centre in the most legible manner possible, with a degree of intensity capable of conferring a sense of identity to a fragmented site. The complex was situated on an artificial promontory, created by a horizontal plateau and extending through to a grassy embankment. This unabashed feature was inspired by a desire to heighten the exhibition centre’s functionality and create meaningful, fluid transitions with the surrounding natural context and peri-urban fabric. The whole is divided into three main parts, each closely linked and offering multiple combinations of use, composed of simple volumes of varying typologies, never stylistically futile and graced with a certain aesthetic clout clearly voicing the centre’s new vocation. The exterior exhibition spaces were treated with the utmost simplicity and delicacy of touch, using extremely durable materials in a range of elegant colours. They offer a high level of versatility and blend harmoniously with the leafy natural backdrop and new buildings. Similarly, the car park espouses the lie of the land and creates a bond between the mineral and vegetable elements of the site. Planting breaks up the rectilinear arrangement of parking spaces, serving not only as screening, but also directing the gaze towards the exhibition centre’s main points of access.
