Bordeaux > SGAP's services building

The Ministry of the Interior launched a project for the construction of a new building in the Bordeaux-Bacalan district which would bring together the hitherto dispersed components of its police services in the city, housed in premises ill-tailored to accommodate developments in the internal organisation of each division. The architects at King Kong designed a building in which rigorous spatial organisation plays a key role, at once adaptable and user-friendly, conveying the SGAP’s new unity and constructive image. The design falls into two parts, with two buildings articulated around an interior courtyard planted with birch trees. The central square serves not only as a place for pleasant recreation for future users, but also as a means of exchange between the two buildings. The main entrance to the site leads first to the administrative services and reception area, before leading on to the technical facilities and storehouses. The main building has three floors and houses the vast majority of the SGAP’s services. It is designed on the overarching principle of flexibility, as requested by its future occupants. The disciplined layout of the structural design corresponds precisely with that of the positioning of the offices, with supporting pillars relegated to the building’s exterior, thus freeing the interior space from obstacles. The structural design for the façade is also compatible with the layout of the offices. Inside, movable partitions mean that evolving needs may be accommodated with ease. Each floor also enjoys collective spaces for coffee breaks, lit by natural light. The meeting rooms and secretarial offices have ample glazing giving onto the corridors. The second building has no upper floor and houses the technical facilities, storehouses and storekeepers offices. As a whole, the new SGAP building is at once elegant and clear-cut, an expression in concrete and steel of a contemporary architectural idiom.
