Voyage-Privé (VPG) wished to build new company headquarters on a plot of land some 22 365 m2 situated in the future ‘ZAC de la Constance’ development zone. The company has enjoyed resounding success in recent years, growing rapidly on the international stage and favours mixed use designs which federate staff around a common project. This is the case for its current company campus and was a main specification for their new architectural project. The urban study commissioned showed that the building plot borders the A8 motorway, known as La Provençale, and recommended that an 8m high embankment, planted with vegetation, be built along the plot’s edge to reduce the effects of noise pollution. The site is south-facing and its gently undulating, well-vegetated terrain offers fine views over the renown Sainte-Victoire mountain made famous by Cézanne, along with the Pilon du Roi. While the urban study advocated an E-shaped building design, the architects at King Kong opted for a single, parallelepiped, in simple lozenge form, espousing the feel of the site and respecting the company’s community ethos. It would be naïve to think that a mere building could compete with the magnificent landscape forming the backdrop to the new project. The design is therefore restrained rather than showy. In no way did the company wish it to become an ostentatious showcase of their activity, but rather
a fertile hotbed of ideas and dynamic exchange, centred around a common goal in a shared spirit of good humoured efficiency. The building designed by King Kong is highly compact and keeps the surface area of exterior façades to a minimum in comparison with an indented design, thus allowing façades to be treated to a much higher standard. The design provides Voyage-Privé with the opportunity of breaking free from compartmentalised floor plans, and offers open spaces and micro spaces promoting staff well being. Ample loggias/terraces define the outer envelope and façades of the new company campus building. A number of priorities were uppermost in mind – protecting staff from noise pollution generated by the adjacent motorway, protecting the site from the region’s strong winds, integrating the new building into the landscape with discreet elegance, designing a building that would be suited to the region’s climate (mild winters and hot summers), providing a variety of interchangeable spaces for exchanging ideas, holding meetings and working and controlling operating costs though energy efficient passive architectural design. The new design creates an agreeable hive of human activity, encompassing for the company’s specific needs and current operating procedures. It offers all members of staff the chance to work in a unique building, full of airy transparency and flexible use. Office space may be tailored to suit specific needs, and the whole functions as a lively workshop or spacious Mediterranean villa, where people may work together in close and vivacious concord.
