Paris Saclay > forum

This building, referred to as the ‘Lieu de Vie’ (a place for living), was designed as a link in the chain of public buildings and spaces on the campus-park to the south of the Plateau de Saclay, defined by the ‘regulating lines’ implemented to bring a sense of unity and cohesion to public spaces where hitherto dispersion and isolation had reigned. It is designed to bring a multitude of functions together and make way for new forms of mobility, those of both today and tomorrow. While the building imagined should be seen from the long-term perspective of ‘amplified geography’, its most meaningful elements may be implemented today, shedding light on the future of vast scale projects whose primordial feature is their sheer size. The architects at King Kong drew upon the desire for shared amenities within the neighbourhood and designed a compact volume built on the principle of plateaus with a series of exterior access corridors overlooking the surrounding urban environment. At the heart of the building lies a patio planted with tall trees, extending out into a series of duckboard terraces, flowing freely on to the neighbouring engineering school, blurring the frontiers between the building’s different functions, espousing the surrounding cityscape and creating a public space where nature has taken hold. The Lieu de Vie enjoys ample glazed facades, staging those enjoying a meal inside, participating in sporting activities or resting beneath the trees at its centre. It is entirely enveloped within a protective stainless steel net. The longitudinal façades are clad with a perforated mesh, providing shelter from the wind to the access corridors and creating shimmering lighting effects. The building functions as a filter, bristling with both straight and meandering staircases, clearly voicing its functions and brimming with possibilities for exploration. It offers coy glimpses of the activities it houses, inviting the onlooker to partake in the contrasting atmospheres and lively spirit in which it is steeped.
