Tours > centre for ancient music

The site of the new CIMAC is situated in the 2 Lions urban regeneration zone. While access to this district of Tours from the historical centre on the opposite bank of the Loire is already in place, the neighbourhood’s image is still in the process of becoming. The architects at King Kong were mindful in their design not only of the site’s marshy subsoil but also of seismic stresses, and therefore chose to erect the building on stilts, each positioned at a meticulously calculated angle. Their design also seeks to preserve the local identity of the area and includes a deep L-shaped ‘moat’ embracing the building on three sides. Spectators and those working and studying in the building share the main entrance, while the main hall is designed to resemble a soaring nave with side aisles and upper galleries, reminiscent of the sacred buildings which, through the ages, have played such a significant role in the development of ancient music. The rectangular layout chosen is extremely versatile and the volume of the hall may be reduced for more intimate performances. From the exterior, the building’s volume arrangement is highly distinctive within the emerging architectural context of the vicinity. The roofing structure is made of wood and sits atop the main section of the building, like the dome of a modern-day basilica. The roof is clad in delicately patterned metal sheeting, resonant once again with echoes of past and present. The remaining section of the building evokes the lines of a musical instrument, while the long brise-soleil along the south-facing facade, together with a number of secondary elements, are homogeneous in appearance. A rusted metal finish was chosen, reminiscent of the copper used since time immemorial in noble building designs, once again conjugating past and future.
