Aurillac > cinema complex

The site for the new cinema complex in Aurillac was situated in the heart of the town’s administrative district, on a square formerly referred to as the Place d’Armes, now Place de la Paix. The project laid down specifications for intelligent reworking of the site, as the square is the culminating point of a number of the town’s busy streets and thoroughfares and serves as the backdrop for the annual Street Theatre Festival. The architects at King Kong deliberately sought to create bonds between the new building and the chosen surfacing of the square, along with the surrounding streets, existing buildings and ever-present wider cityscape. Concrete stamped with a repeated slab pattern clads the central pedestrian area which, in almost organic fashion, rises upwards towards the square’s south-easterly edge, creating a sense of gentle fusion between the open public space and cinema. The seven screening rooms are positioned in the basement, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This also allowed the architects to preserve the interchange of closed and open spaces true to any fully functioning city square, thereby strengthening the spatial intelligibility and homogeneity of the whole and lending it an energy devoid of formal severity. The building’s upper portions and rooftop were given a more expressive role, setting the new cinema on the map as a clearly voiced architectural attribute. From whatever position in the square, one’s gaze and steps are inescapably drawn towards the amply glazed entrance hall at the buildings southeast corner. The use of concrete for the main structure guaranteed not only the building’s effortless incorporation into this new public space, but also the high degree of its sound and thermal insulation.
