Auxerre > music arena

The future Cité de la Musique is a key landmark within the urban fabric of Auxerre. As an institution of importance it has received due note, symbolically marking the entrance to the city and dedicated not only to music in all its varied guises, but also to creating social bonds as a place for enjoying life or meeting others. The close presence of the River Yonne, along with an activity park, green spaces and nearby sports and leisure facilities, encouraged the architects to give pride of place to pedestrian access and the landscape in their design, linking the building with the park on the riverbank opposite and encompassing a wooded area whose shade protects the future auditorium. The main concert hall, positioned within the courtyard of the National Music School was designed with stage requirements uppermost in mind, along with capacity and adaptability to multiple configurations in space and time. It creates bonds with the wider context of the courtyard, used as an urban stage. The design’s flexibility and capacity for future adaptation makes the hall a place to commit to, to appropriate, a hall with a future, capable of espousing change while losing nothing of its essential character. The hall and club are separated both physically and in terms of sound interference, but may be interconnected thanks to a system of double movable walls. The renovation work carried out on the music school brought the building up to speed with official norms and made way for the pre-broadcasting of music and dance. The design for rebuilding the auditorium, situated to the music school’s rear, resembles an opalescent box, built with precious wood and opaque in mood. Set within woodland with fountains and running water, the concert hall is shielded against noise pollution by a vast glass curtain wall and provides a harmonious and relaxing setting for enjoying music. As a work of architecture, it is a pleasure to behold from the avenue and riverbank path.
