Bordeaux > Seeko'o hotel

Hotel Seeko’o is the fruit of conceptual research into how best to slip an eminently contemporary building into Bordeaux’s time-honoured quayside façade. The gracious salutations the building addresses to its counterparts on either side should not disguise the overriding desire it expresses for a clear break with pastiche. It is a large, meticulously designed building occupying the total surface area of the site available. Where the quays meet the street running perpendicular to them, the building’s corner is chamfered, but with a delicacy of touch which would surely have delighted Bordeaux’s architects of old. The elegant transition this creates between the two facades accentuates the building’s sculptural modernity. The attention paid to volume arrangement, windows, openings and interior spaces goes hand in hand with the innovative idea to clad the façade in Corian, a material hitherto only used for interior surfacing, demanding a technical prowess never before attempted. The hotel’s facade is therefore composed of lithe, flowing lines, where each panel of Corian meets the next, rippling under the sunlight’s gentle touch. The uncommon beauty of this dense, monolithic building studded with enigmatic glass panes and resting gently by the riverbank, is a clear refusal of disarticulated architectural gesturing, of the dangers of unbridled deconstructivist dissipation or the inane absurdity of falsely expressive interpretations of the empty box. The spirit of the great Modernist architects transpires from the building’s cohesive design and is written all over the pristine whiteness of its walls, where even the shadows drown in its purity. Over and beyond the gentle mocking of the ribbon of townhouses along the quayside façade upstream, this building is redolent with hope for forgotten areas in desperate need of a future downstream, from Bacalan to the wet docks. And this hotel has lots to say to them.
